By JUDY BYRGE Morgan County News They are some of the better students you’ll find at Wartburg College in Iowa and their fields of study are varied but they came to Wartburg last week with one purpose — to build 1.8 miles of the Cumberland Trail. Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa is affiliated with the Lutheran Church and many students there spend their spring break doing a service project. “When they said Wartburg College, I said what a cool idea,” said Tony Hook, director of the Cumberland Trail Conference (CTC). who led the build. He added that Wartburg College and Wartburg, Tn share a common German heritage. There were 16 in the group that camped at Frozen Head State Park last week and then hit the trail with Hook. He said the trail, known as the North Boundary, was originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1938 but has long since been closed. The Wartburg College group spent four days using hand forestry tools to build and clear the trail. Group leaders Shelby Colwell and Erika Nelson said they wanted to lead an “environmentally friendly” project and Nelson hopes to return to the Cumberland Trail with another group next year. “We wanted to give back to the environment,” Colwell explained. She added that there were four other trips available to students at the college but the 16 in her group chose the trail building experience. “It’s the first time we’ve camped. First time we’ve built trails ... it’s a first time for our university. We’ve never done this kind of trip before.” “I’m interested to come back here and see the trail in it’s finished entirety ... knowing that we did something that is going to stay here for years to come,” Nelson added. The campers admitted that it wasn’t exactly an easy week but was very worthwhile. “We were sore every night and every morning but it was a good sore,” Colwell explained. Gary Darnell, a Wartburg businessman, serves on the CTC Board of Directors. Darnell said he built trail as a boy scout and hopes more local residents will develop an interest in the parks and public lands that make this area so beautiful.
