The Oakdale Lady Eagles traveled down the mountain on Thursday to face Region 2A opponent Rockwood, but lost by a score of 4-2.

“We are still looking for wins, but I am very pleased with the girls’ effort tonight,” said Oakdale head coach Melanie Hicks. “We are showing improvement at every aspect of the game.”

After a more than 30-minute delay due to a scheduling mishap, the game got underway. Rockwood struck first in the bottom of the first inning via Shelby LeBlanc reaching home on a passed ball.

The Tigers added insurance in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Megan Monday singled to short. Kara Griffin followed with a single to left, scoring Monday. An Olivia Metcalfe triple to the wall scored Griffin, giving Rockwood a 3-0 lead.

Oakdale reached home in the top of the third. Nikki Howell scored on an error to get the Eagles on the board, trailing 3-1.

Rockwood had a chance to put the game out of reach in the bottom of the third, but Lady Eagle pitcher Jayden Ruppe got out of the jam by forcing two consecutive popups, both of which were caught by catcher Brittany York.

Each team traded outs for two innings until the Lady Tigers reached home on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Cassidy Tilley.

The Eagles struck again in the top of the seventh. Darby Francis would cross the plate on a hit by Katy Woods. The late run was not enough, as Rockwood held on for a 4-2 victory.

“Three weeks ago, this team [Rockwood] mercy ruled us,” Hicks said. “Tonight, we went back and forth with them,” added Hicks. “I’m proud that they came to fight tonight and didn’t give up.”

Nikki Howell (2-3) led Oakdale offensively. Next, the Lady Eagles will play Monterey at home on April 6. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
