Exploring Morgan County

-A A +A

With the last leaves falling from the tree tops, Fall is coming to an end. Fall festivities like Halloween and Thanksgiving have already passed, but this year’s celebrations are far from over. Now, it’s time to get into the holiday spirit.
I’m not going to lie, I’m a little excited for the holiday season. I’ve been listening to Christmas music since October, and I’ve already made a batch of gingerbread cookies with my sister. But hey, it’s the most wonderful time of the year, isn’t it?
Of course, after Halloween candy, Thanksgiving feasts, and now gingerbread cookies, a little exercise is long overdue. That’s why, in this column, I’m going to focus on places to hike and explore outdoors here in Morgan County.
Here are two parks I’d like to hike at this month:
Keeping with the wintry theme, my first pick is Frozen Head State Park. Frozen Head has a wide variety of trails for all levels. They have nice bathrooms, and two playgrounds. (Yes, I may be 15, but I’m definitely going to check out those playgrounds.) The park is located in Wartburg.
The second place I’d like to go to is the Obed Wild & Scenic River park. There are oodles of hiking trails, many alongside the beautiful river and leading to outlooks.
I visited the Obed when I was little, and became a Junior Ranger. It’s a fun little program they have there, and it only takes a few minutes to join. You get a little ranger badge and certificate, which I remember thinking was the coolest thing ever when I was little. If you have young children, it’s definitely worth the quick pit stop.
While researching, I discovered something new: There are tons of rock-climbing routes, both bouldering and top-rope, for all types of climbers. They’re all really well maintained, too. I’m big on climbing, so I’m excited to see what the park has in store.
So, whether you’re into hiking, playing on playgrounds or climbing, Morgan County has got you covered. I don’t know about you, but I’m excited to explore.
If you have any suggestions as to where I should explore next, please send me an email at ExploringMorgan@gmail.com.
