  • Coalfield Football Team gets championship rings
    On February 7th the Coalfield Middle School football team celebrated their 10-0 season with Coach Basler presenting them with State Championship rings. This was a big thing for the boys who worked hard all season and in the end it paid off. For five of the 8th graders this was their 2nd ring, they won state two years ago. Congratulations to the team and good luck next year on making it two in a row. All the parents and players would like to thank the coaches for all they have done for the team.
  • Eagles (14-7) fall in East Tennessee Title Game
    By BRIAN LANGLEY blangley@morgancountynews.net             SEVIERVILLE—Three Morgan County Middle School basketball teams were competing for an East Tennessee Sectional Championship at Catlettsburg Elementary School in Sevierville.     The Oakdale boys got the closest to a title, but claimed silver, while the Coalfield girls ended their season in the semifinals, and the Coalfield boys were defeated in the quarterfinals.   • Coalfield advances to quarterfinals of TMSAA East Tennessee Sectionals
             SEVIERVILLE—The end of the season came for three Morgan County Middle School basketball teams at Catlettsburg Elementary School Saturday.     The Oakdale Lady Eagles and both Sunbright teams were beaten in the first round, while the Coalfield Yellow Jackets advanced to the quarterfinals with a win over Little Milligan.   • 2010-11 All-Morgan County Junior High School Girls Basketball Team
    Superlatives: Coach of the Year: Thomas Davis (Wartburg)—18-7 record, Area 4-AA Runnerup, East Tennessee Class AA Runnerup. Players of the Year: Nina Carter (Wartburg, 8th, Forward)—9.1 pts., 9.7 reb., 22 pts. season-high; and Victoria Hamby (Wartburg, 8th, Forward)—9.2 pts., 8.9 reb., 27 pts. season-high. Offensive Players of the Year: Natalie Rogers (Oakdale, 8th, Wing)—7.1 pts., 2.5 reb., 3.3 stl., 14 three-pointers; and Shelby Jones (Sunbright, 8th, Guard)—6.2 pts., 2.3 reb., 1.8 ast., 5 three-pointers.
  • Area 4 Champs Crowned
        SUNBRIGHT—Morgan County teams swept the Area 4 Championships Saturday night at Sunbright.
  • Wartburg teams end season in Area Tourney
    LENOIR CITY—Wartburg’s trip to the Area 4 Small Division Basketball Tournament ended with both teams falling in the first round Saturday at Lenoir City.     The #6-seed Wartburg Lady Bulldogs dropped a 27-22 decision to #3-seed Harriman, while the #4-Bulldogs fell to #5-seed Midway 38-23. In both games, Wartburg failed to score in the opening quarter. GIRLS GAME     The Wartburg Lady Bulldogs saw their season come to a close with a narrow 27-22 loss to Harriman.
  • Area 4 Tourney tips off at Sunbright
        SUNBRIGHT—Seeding was important and seeding played true during the opening night of the Area 4 Middle School Tournament Saturday at Sunbright.     Both the higher seed girls teams and the two higher seed boys teams won their battles in four games that were all decided by double-digits.     The #4-seed Petros-Joyner Lady Patriots beat #5-Norwood 41-14, while #2-seed Sunbright knocked off #3-seed Oakdale 35-21 in girls action.
  • Coalfield’s East Tennessee State Champion team leads All-Morgan County football squad
    The 2011 All-Morgan County Middle School Team has been selected to represent the four teams.     Coalfield’s East Tennessee Championship team headlines the squad with five of the seven superlatives and 11 players recognized.     
  • Coalfield takes titles at Morgan County Holiday Tournament
        OAKDALE—Coalfield middle school basketball teams got a double dip of the Morgan County Championships Saturday at Oakdale.     The Lady Jackets notched a 28-23 win over top-seed Sunbright, while Coalfield’s boys earned a 42-31 victory against Wartburg to capture the 2011 Morgan County Holiday Tournament Titles. GIRLS GAME     For the third time in seven seasons, Coalfield’s Kevin Walls has guided his team to a Morgan County Championship.
  • Coalfield earns 2nd gold ball
        Coalfield’s Middle School football team recently captured their second TMSAA Eastern Division State Championship with a convincing 34-0 win over Huntsville.
