Behind the Scenes - Technology can Make a Difference

Morgan County Medical Center is committed to providing the best patient care in the area.  We are pleased to announcethe implementation of an electronic medical record (EMR) system for our patients. This new technology takes patient care to a new level of quality.

The Bureau of Primary Health awarded EMR implementation grants to 384 clinics.  Morgan County Medical Center was fortunate to qualify.  http://bphc.hrsa.gov/recovery/cip/.   Technology can make a difference, but I was very surprised at just HOW expensive it can be.

As a small, rural clinic this grant offered our organization a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.  Morgan County Medical Center is a not-for-profit clinic that provides primary care services to all patients in our community.  Many of our patients are insured, but a growing number are uninsured and eligible for sliding-fee discounts for office visits, lab and x-ray services.  As a community-based clinic, we probably could not afford EMR without this grant and are grateful that we can offer the technology our patients deserve.

Electronic Medical Recordsare a complete record of patient history entered into a secure computer system and digitalized.  EMR offers accurate and quick communication between physicians.

EMRs have safety benefits. They provide physicians with alerts and reminders regarding treatment such as potential drug interactions with other prescription drugs a patient may be taking, minimizing potential negative outcomes.

EMRs are confidential. Only authorized users will be able to access patient files.

Morgan County Medical Center has provided quality care since 1974. The conversion to EMR is just the latest change in our continuing efforts to provide our patients with the best health care possible.  The physicians and staff look forward to bringing the benefits of this change to our patients.

During the transition phase when we upgrade from paper records to EMR, our staff at Morgan County Medical Center and Deer Lodge Clinic will be learning the best ways to use the new system. This may slow us down a bit at first.

In the end, we will have a state-of-the-art system in place. We believe that benefits everyone.
