The Oakdale Eagles were in fine form on a sweltering, muggy Thursday afternoon as they outdueled their visitors from Kentucky, the Lynn Camp Wildcats, by a 5-3 margin.

Longtime Oakdale head coach J.R. Voyles seemed to be largely satisfied with the progress his Oakdale Eagles made in this scrimmage. “It wasn’t a bad day for us. We got in some good work and a lot of newcomers stepped up, and guys we weren’t so sure about before this scrimmage got a lot better.”

Lynn Camp kicked off the scrimmage with an 80-yard touchdown run on the opening play from scrimmage. Oakdale responded in kind with an 80-yard touchdown jaunt of their own, courtesy of Nate Arrowood.

After both teams stale-mated offensively on their next set of ten-play drives, the Wildcats scored another 80-yard touchdown run. Not to be outdone, following another couple of stalled drives, the Eagles answered with a 22-yard touchdown run from Taylor Braddock. Dave Weismuller scored on a 20-yard touchdown strike from Arrowood to give Oakdale the 3-2 lead.

After the Eagles stopped Lynn Camp on their next series, Oakdale expanded their lead to 4-2 on an Arrowood to Braddock 18-yard touchdown pass. Lynn Camp, however, responded with a 48-yard touchdown run to pull within 4-3. Oakdale would put the game out of reach on a 31-yard touchdown run from Braddock to make the final score 5-3.

“This time of year, things are a work in progress for us.” Coach Voyles admitted post-game. “We’re still a bit off in a few areas, but that’s to be expected. I don’t know any team right now that doesn’t have the same sort of issues as far as timing before the season starts. You’re just not as crisp as you are in the pre-season as you should be by week ten.”
