The Wartburg Lady Bulldogs started the district tournament strong with a 41-25 win over the Fort Loudoun Lady Braves on Saturday night to move on to the semifinals.

“Going home is not easy and I think that’s why we came out strong,” Wartburg head coach Rene Davis said.

“They didn’t want to go home, so they gave it everything they had.”

The Lady Bulldogs set the tone for the game early on and jumped ahead 9-6 at the end of the first quarter. Olivia Davis led Wartburg with 5 points, while Emma Jenkins scored all 6 of the Lady Braves’ points.

Elizabeth Keathley and Madison Laymance combined for 8 points in the second quarter to help Wartburg build a 17-11 lead at the end of the first half.

The Lady Bulldogs backed off some and Lady Braves picked up some momentum in the third quarter to cut Wartburg’s lead down to 23-21 at the end of the period.

The Lady Bulldogs quickly bounced back in the fourth quarter, though, and outscored Fort Loudoun 18-4 to close out the game with the 41-25 win. Makenna Williams was huge for Wartburg in the final frame and led the team with 8 points in the period.

“Makenna cleaned up a lot of offensive rebounds and put backs, especially late in the game,” Davis said.

Olivia Davis and Elizabeth Keathley were also big standouts to Davis.

“Olivia took over as point for basically the whole game, had several assists and ran our offense well,” she said. “They tried to take Elizabeth Keathley out of the game, but I thought she played some great defense and she was still active and scoring.”

Keathley led the team with 14 points, while Williams put up 10 and Davis added 7.

Wartburg (41) Keathley 14, Davis 7, Poland 5, Byrge 2, Williams 10, Laymance 3.

Fort Loudoun (25) Ivey 6, Jenkins 10, Stoner 9.
