By Taylor Crombie

The Wartburg Lady Bulldogs played a close first half against Scott, but shut down the Lady Highlanders in the second half while continuing to be dominant on offense to win 78-51.

Hannah Hurtt was hot all night and led the Lady Bulldogs with three 3-pointers in the first quarter to help put Wartburg ahead 21-16.

Wartburg did not put up as many points in the second quarter and missed a few free throws, while Scott’s Journey Babb scored five points at the end of the period to put the Lady Highlanders ahead.

Scott took a 36-33 lead at halftime after the Lady Highlanders outscored the Lady Bulldogs 20-12.

Whatever momentum Scott started to pick up at the end of the first half vanished after the Lady Highlanders came out of the locker room for the second. Wartburg outscored Scott 45-15 for the remainder of the game and limited the Lady Highlanders to only four points in the fourth quarter.

Makayla Poland was huge for Wartburg in the second half, scoring 11 of her 17 total points between the third and fourth quarter.

Madison Williams also bounced back in the third quarter, scoring seven points after only sinking a single foul shot in the first.

Hurtt led the Lady Bulldogs with 22 points, while Poland was not far behind with 17.

Babb was the only Lady Highlander to reach double digits with 14.

With the 78-51 win over Scott, the Lady Bulldogs improved to 2-1.

Wartburg will dive right into district play with back-to-back county rivalry games at Coalfield on Dec. 1 and Oakdale on Dec. 5. Tip off for both games is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

The Lady Bulldogs defeated the Coalfield Lady Jackets twice in the regular season and again in the District 4 Semifinal last year. They were 3-0 against Oakdale as well, defeating the Lady Eagles in both regular season contests and the district tournament.
