The Wartburg Middle Lady Bulldogs used an aggressive defense to take a 43-35 win against the Oliver Springs Lady Bobcats Thursday evening at Oliver Springs Middle School.

The first quarter began with the Lady ‘Cats building a 7-3 lead thanks to a scoring flurry from Megan Armstrong, Ella Hampton and Madi Jones.

Wartburg was able to find some life due to scores from Elizabeth Keathley and Olivia Davis.

Davis sank a three-pointer to highlight the opening quarter for the Lady Bulldogs, but it wasn’t enough as Oliver Springs had a 14-10 lead at the end of the period.

Things began to change in the second frame.

The Lady ‘Cats maintained their lead, but it was shrinking.

Wartburg’s full-court defense caused turnovers and threw the Oliver Springs offensive attack of kilter.

The turnovers served for the Lady Bulldogs to gain points or if they couldn’t be converted, they were enough to keep the Lady ‘Cats from expanding their lead.

With Oliver Springs ahead, a trey by Wartburg followed by a three-point play from Makenna Williams gave the Lady Dawgs the go ahead.

Lydia Snider sank a jump shot to knot the score at 18, but it would be the last time the Lady ‘Cats came close.

Wartburg’s defense continued to throw Oliver Springs off, forcing hurried shots and turnovers.

By the time the teams went to the locker rooms, the Lady Dawgs had a 28-20 lead.

After the break, the fast pace set in the opening half appeared to slow.

Wartburg only mustered eight points compared to five by the Lady ‘Cats.

The final period saw resurgence in scoring by both teams.

Jones and Armstrong combined for the majority of Oliver Springs’ points in the fourth, with Jones knocking down shots despite heavy defensive pressure for the Lady Bulldogs.

The one-two punch from the Lady ‘Cats wasn’t enough to get them back in the game.

Although Wartburg scored only seven points in the final quarter, the lead it had previously built was enough to give the Lady Bulldogs the game.

Davis led Wartburg with 11 points.

Jones led Oliver Springs and all scorers with 16.

Wartburg (43) Keathley 9, Davis 11, Poland 7, Byrge 3, Williams 7, Armes 6.

Oliver Springs (35) Chaston 4, Hampton 5, T. Jones 2, Armstrong 4, M. Jones 16, Snider 4.
