  • Morgan County News - History October 1956

        On the third of October, three young men from Sunbright joined the regular Army for three years. They are now at Fort Chaffee, Ark., where they will take a course in basic training. Then they will receive a leave home. The three are the following: Ralph Hamby, William Walker, Carl Ooten. These men enlisted under the Army Buddy Plan where they will receive basic training together. M.Sgt. Pace enlisted these men.

        Oakdale High School has elected its candidates for Homecoming Queen. They are: Dorothy Leathers from the Freshman Class; Peggy Farmer from the Sophomore Class; Freida Tate from the Junior Class, and Carolyn Sanders from the Senior Class. The queen will be crowned at the Homecoming game with Coalfield on Oct. 19.

        Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hawn announce the birth of a daughter on Oct. 5.
        Mr. S.C. Scott is very ill at this writing. His many friends wish for him a quick recovery.
        Mr. and Mrs. M.C. Kreis announce the birth of a son at Harriman Hospital last week.
        Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Whitaker of Knoxville, and Mrs. Mattie Hues of Cincinnati, Ohio, were visiting Mr. and Mrs. Pat Morgan, Brenda and Brent, Sunday.

        All FIRST VOTERS in Morgan County who have never voted for Governor or President are invited to meet at Wartburg on October 25, 1956 at 7 p.m. (EST) at Courthouse for the purpose of organizing a “FIRST VOTERS Club” to get all people of the county who have not heretofore voted for Governor or President to vote in the November 6, 1956 election. About forty-five minutes will be devoted to organizing and business, after which session, a get-acquainted fellowship party will follow.

Justice, Coalfield; Verda Lee Wilson, Joyner.

        A band of Gypsies, escaping with an undetermined amount of money, is being sought in connection with a robbery Saturday afternoon, Sept. 21, 1991, in Save-A-Lot Food Store, Wartburg.

        It has taken more than 20 years, but Reuben and Delcia Jones are finally seeing the fruits of their labor.
        In fact, neighbors and friends have been going ape over Joneses garden, especially a couple of banana trees, one of which is bearing fruit for the first time.
        “People are fascinated by the tree,” said Delcia Jones. “People stop by and look at it and several have asked to get any new plants that come up.”
