Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary closed in 2009. Current plans will revitalize the prison and turn it into a tourist attraction and distillery.
Prison plans take step forward

A bill that will help finance tourism development at the Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary site in Petros passed the state senate with a unanimous vote and is expected to clear the state House of Representatives and continue on to Gov. Bill Haslam.

“This is a major piece we were able to get,” said Sen. Ken Yager (R-Kingston) on Monday evening.

The bill is just one part of turning Brushy Mountain into a tourist destination instead of allowing it to languish as an abandoned correctional facility.
