Eagles cap season off with win against Winfield

The Oakdale Eagles took on The Winfield Bobcats on Thursday night for their eight grade night and last game of the season.

Oakdale was able to end their season on a high note as they picked up a victory on the night.

Eloy Vera picked up a 15-yard gain from Joseph Summers to start the game and pick up the first down. Summers then tossed a bomb to Austin Swafford for a 41 yard touchdown for the Eagles first touchdown of the evening. Vera then ran things in for the two point conversion. The score was 8-0 with 6:11 left in the first quarter.

Winfield took over on their own 42 to start their first drive of the night. The Bobcats were able to score, but the Eagles held them off on the two point conversion to keep the score 8-6 in favor of the home team with 3:12 left in the first.

Summers tossed the ball for 45 yards to Austin Swafford for the touchdown to make the score 14-6 with 1:21 left in the first quarter.

Winfield took the kickoff back to give themselves a chance at the tie with the two point play. Winfield converted to make the score 14-14 with 1:00 left in the first quarter.

Vera returned the kickoff to the 39 to set up great field position for the Eagles. Winfield was able to recover a fumble on the 41 to get the ball back with 48.4 seconds left in the quarter.

Oakdale stopped the Bobcats on fourth down to get the ball on the Bobcat 43. Summers threw a nice 25-yard pass to Vera to put the ball on the 5 for Oakdale. The Eagles turned the ball over and was unable to regain the lead.

The Eagles were quickly able to regain the lead as they picked up a safety and earned two points along with getting the ball back on the Bobcat 37.

Nehemiah Cooney hauled in a 35-yard pass from Summers to put the Eagles on the 5-yard line with 1:44 left in the half. Vera threw a halfback pass to Swafford for his third touchdown catch of the half. The two point conversion was no good. Oakdale led 22-14 going into the second half.

Winfield was able to score on the first drive of the second half followed by a 2-point conversion to tie things up at 22-22 with 6:24 left in the third quarter.

Oakdale took over on the Winfield 46-yard line for their first drive of the second half. Oakdale was driving, but turned the ball over to give the Bobcats the ball on their own 25 yard line.

The score stayed at 22-22 going into the fourth quarter.

The Eagles stopped the Bobcats on fourth down to take over on their own 40 yard line.

Summers went to Swafford for 25 yards followed by a 12-yard gain by Vera to put the Eagles in business from the 20 yard line. The Eagles were unable to punch it in as they tuned the ball over with 4:30 left in the contest.

Oakdale picked up a huge fumble recovery on their 45 yard line when Jacob Hoskins recovered a fumble with 2:49 left in the contest and tied at 22-22. Oakdale was building momentum and tossed a touchdown, but an illegal forward pass penalty on fourth down gave the Bobcats the ball on the 50 with 1:24 left in the game.

The Eagles held off the Bobcats and forced overtime.

Vera powered in on fourth down in the first overtime on fourth down for the Eagles, but Winfield held strong on the 2-point conversion. Oakdale held a 28-22 lead as Winfield had their chance to score.

Winfield scored on their first play to have a chance to score on the 2-point conversion. The Eagles held strong and caused a second overtime.

Oakdale came up huge on defense in the second overtime as they held Winfield as they only needed a score to pick up the victory.

Joseph Summers, who had a great night, ended things perfectly as on fourth down he hit Vera in the end zone for  a Eagle touchdown to make the score 34-28.

Summers ended the night with 215 passing yards and was 11-19 with three touchdowns through the air.

Vera scored three touchdowns three different ways on the night as he tossed one, caught one, and ran one in.

Austin Swafford had 124 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
