Lady Tigers split first games at KSA Holiday Tournament

The Sunbright Lady Tigers traveled to Orlando, Fla. after Christmas to play in the KSA Holiday Tournament at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex near Disney World.

The Lady Tigers opened play Thursday with a pair of games. The first game was a 41-25 victory over North Oldham, Ky. The second game didn’t go as well as Sunbright dropped a 54-49 decision to St. Cloud, Fla.

Sunbright vs. North Oldham

Defense has been Sunbright’s calling card all season, and that was the case Thursday morning as the Lady Tigers put the clamps on North Oldham, 41-25. The final score could have been worse, but Sunbright called off the dogs down the stretch, as North Oldham scored 13 of its 25 points in the fourth quarter.

Sunbright led 6-2 after one period of play, and the lead ballooned to 22-6 by halftime.

Six players scored for Sunbright in the first half with Lauren Farmer and Taylor Cox leading the pack with 6 points each.

Sunbright added 4 points to its lead in the third period after outscoring North Oldham, 10-6.

Makenna Brown (6 points) and Lexi Griffith (4 points) combined for all of Sunbright’s points in the period.

Griffith (9 points) and Brown (8 points) were the leading scorers for the Lady Tigers on the day.

Sunbright vs. St. Cloud

The Lady Tigers stood toe-to-toe with one of the largest schools in the state of Florida before dropping a 54-49 decision to the Lady Bulldogs.

St. Cloud has approximately 2,000 students and competes in Class 8A in Florida. Florida has nine classifications in girls’ basketball.

St. Cloud came out quick and took a 20-12 lead after eight minutes of play.

Brown had a big first quarter for Sunbright with 6 points.

The Lady Tigers settled down and used the 3-pointer to cut a point off the deficit in the second period.

Farmer, Hannah Shannon and Abby Byrd all hit 3-pointers in the frame as Sunbright outscored the Lady Bulldogs 13-12 to pull within 32-25 at halftime.

Brown and Farmer scored 4 points each in the third quarter as Sunbright closed the gap to 40-37 entering the final period of play.

St. Cloud, however, held on down the stretch for the 54-49 victory.

Farmer (16 points) and Brown (15 points) scored in double figures for Sunbright in defeat.
