Court officer David Harney stands outside the main courtroom doors at the courthouse on Jan. 20. After last week’s county commission vote, a bailiff will only be on duty while court is in session, and citizens will only be subject to screening if they have business in the courtroom itself.
Changes are mistake say some employees

Not all courthouse employees are satisfied with the Morgan County Commission’s vote to open the courthouse doors, reduce screening and allow handguns in the building.

A narrow Jan. 12 vote by the commission meant big changes by last Wednesday when the scanner was moved to the second floor and the sign prohibiting handguns in the building was taken down. The lack of signage means anyone with a handgun carry permit may bring their weapon into the courthouse. State law would prevent them from carrying the firearm into the courtroom itself.
