  • Organic Crops Field Tour for April 28

        Everyone is invited to attend the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture’s 2016 Organic Crops Field Tour, on Thursday, April 28. Visitors will learn first-hand about the latest research efforts and organic-growing recommendations while enjoying a walking tour of UT’s East Tennessee AgResearch Education Center Organic Crops Unit.

        The Morgan County Soil Conservation District will have its annual Tree & Plant Sale on Thursday and Friday, April 14-15 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturday, April 16 from 8 a.m.-noon.
        Many varieties of plants and trees for landscaping the home and farm will be available from Jansch and Whaley Nursery of Wartburg and Boyd & Boyd Nursery from McMinnville. Prices are very reasonable with most plants being offered below retail. For more information, call 346-3770 or stop by the NRCS/Morgan SCD office.

        The Morgan-Scott Project will continue to take application for garden supplies until April 7. Call 423-965-3131 between 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Callers are advised to call until they talk to a person and not leave a message. Morgan-Scott does not have the time or staff to return calls.

        Several area gardening and horticultural experts are slated to speak at the 14th Annual Flower & Garden Show, April 22-24 at the Cumberland County Fairgrounds.
        Friday, April 22 at 1 p.m., Debbie Joines will present Plant Fertility in Straw Bale Gardening. At 2:30 p.m., Douglas Airhart will speak on The Three Ps of Trees: Picking, Planting and Pruning. Then, at 4 p.m., Melinda Hedgecoth takes the stage with Family Stories and the Weather-predicting Traditions of My Mother, Mrs. Helen Lane and Our Pioneer Forefathers.

        The Master Gardeners of Roane County will host a Brown Bag Lunch & Learn Series Saturday, April 9 at noon in the UT Extension Office, located at 3074 Roane State Highway in Midtown. This session will be “Straw Bale Gardening” with certified Master Gardener Lynne Blaker. This is an ongoing series, which will be the 2nd Saturday of each month.
