    The green things of Winter

        Compared to the other seasons, winters seem pretty colorless, with the leaves off the trees and laying brown on the ground. But through closer observation you can see plants that remain green through the winter, and seeing or perhaps even identifying them can brighten up a winter hike in the woods. What follows are some of the more common green plants you will find in our area.

  • Buffalo Ridge Refuge plans second Young Sportsman Squirrel Hunt

        The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency will hold the second Young Sportsman Squirrel Hunt at Buffalo Ridge Refuge in Humphreys County on Saturday, Feb. 16. There is no cost to participate in the hunt for youth ages 6-16.
        Buffalo Ridge Refuge is also the site of youth deer, Becoming An Outdoors-Woman, trapping education, and Wounded Soldier events.

  • Frozen Head State Park Programs

    Feb. 14 – 9 a.m. — Trail Work Day – Spicewood: Join Ranger Joe for an invigorating day of work on the Spicewood Trail. We will be meeting at the Park Visitor Center. We expect to be out of the woods by 1-2 p.m. Please bring work clothes, hiking books, a sack lunch and plenty of water. This will be a more difficult trail so be prepared. These work days will be weather dependent. Please email david.brady@tn.gov if you are interested in attending.

    Cold Nights and Bright Lights: Deciphering Wintertime Astronomy

        The short daylight hours, the dark, crisp nights, and the rural backdrop of Morgan County offer perfect astronomy viewing opportunities. Nightfall comes early; there is no reason to stay up past bedtime in to see the starry sky. Just step outside after dinner!

  • Annual Cumberland Trail work day is Feb. 16

        Tennessee Citizens for Wilderness Planning (TCWP), Cumberland Trail State Park, and Obed Wild and Scenic River will be hosting the annual Cumberland Trail work day on Saturday, Feb. 16. Volunteers should meet at Rock Creek Campground at 10 a.m. (EST).

  • Register now for Tennessee Farmer Academy to begin March 29

        The East Tennessee New Farmer Academy is a 7 month certificate program designed for those with an interest in becoming agriculture entrepreneurs.
        The program focuses on teaching concepts, providing information, and facilitating the hands on experience and connections needed to build a solid viable and successful agricultural business.
        Registration will take place through the UT-TSU Extension Office in Morgan County. The $175 fee will cover materials, lunches and snacks for all 7 workshop dates.

    Feb. 7 – 11 a.m. — Judge Branch Hike: Join Ranger Kayley for a 3 mile, brisk, hike along the Judge Branch Loop. This is a moderate hike and requires sturdy footwear. Meet at the Old Mac Trail Head.

    A Taste of the Wild: Watercress

        If you want to experience the taste of a wild fresh vegetable in the dead of winter, give watercress a try. Picked at the right time, it makes a good addition to a salad or as a cooked green.  

  • TWRA announces record black bear harvest

        With the 2018 Tennessee black bear hunting season in the books, hunters harvested a record 759 black bears last year breaking the previous record of 589 set in 2011. TWRA Black Bear Program Leader Dan Gibbs points towards a growing black bear population, a sparse acorn crop and good weather to account for the record setting season.
