  • Arrest made in Miller murder

        A 30-year-old Sunbright man has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of William (Bill) Miller who was found shot to death in his home on Easter Sunday. The arrest was made Friday afternoon.

        Chief Deputy William Angel with the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office said Dustin Wayne Morgan has been charged and is being held without bond in the Morgan County Jail.

  • Coalfield takes two from Lady Eagles in Dist. 4-A softball

        COALFIELD—Coalfield kept their lead in District 4-A softball with a pair of wins against county-rival Oakdale last week.

        The Lady Jackets (13-4, 6-1 in District 4-A) chalked up a 13-0 win at home last Monday and then captured a 20-1 victory at Oakdale last Tuesday.

        In the 13-0 home win, Coalfield pounded out 16 hits, including a home run by Andrea Foster, and sophomore ace Lindsey Fadnek pitched a perfect game in five innings.

  • Eagles shock Coalfield, 8-7

        COALFIELD—One game ended in five innings, while the other wasn’t decided until the bottom of the last inning. In the end, Coalfield and Oakdale earned a split in their two game series last week.

        The Jackets chalked up a 12-2 victory at home last Monday, while the Eagles captured an exciting 8-7 win at home for their first triumph of Coalfield in several seasons.

  • Davis, Hodgen lose jobs

        Two principals and two supervisors have not been hired back for the 2010-11 school year.

        Morgan County Director of Schools, Dr. Edd Diden, has decided to replace David Hodgen, principal of Central Elementary, and Larry Davis, principal of Central Middle School. These principals were notified of Diden’s decision on April 13.

        In addition supervisors Kathy Carroll and Judy Hurst will not return in their current positions.

  • Fire spreads to 83 acres

        Fire crews and forestry workers spent about 20 hours fighting a forest fire that resulted from illegal burning in the Deer Lodge area.

  • Weight loss group organizing March 11

     I just want to remind everyone who has been calling about organizing a “biggest loser” type program here in the county that we are going to have our organizational meeting next week.

        If you are interested in helping to organize the program, we will gather at 5:30  p.m. in the meeting room at Morgan County Medical Center on Thursday, March 11.

        If our group turns out to be too large for that space, we will search out another location.

  • Coalfield competes at Gibbs

        GIBBS—Coalfield stepped up against higher-level competition this past weekend during the Gibbs Invitational Softball Tournament.

        The Lady Jackets (11-4) finished the weekend with a 2-2 record with wins over Father Ryan and CAK and losses to Karns and Bearden.

        Motivated, dedicated and disciplined are just a few words that describe Kayla Yokley. All those traits have helped her to receive an athletic scholarship for swimming at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Kentucky.

  • County audit shows deficiencies
